Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang Trek | Outdoor Himalayan Treks, Nepal

Upper Mustang Trek journeys you through the region of Nepal that is also called Mustang Bhot, i.e. Mustang Tibet, in Nepal. The reason is that this area falls beyond the mighty Hiamalayan range, isolating it from the rest of the nation and making it closer to Tibet.

Mustang has developed its own distinct cultural and geographical traits, making it an attraction not just for ordinary visitors but also for anthropologists, archeologists, and geologists.  For one thing, it is still practically a kingdom (people here respect Jigme Parbal Bista as a cultural monarch although the government has withdrawn recognition) when Nepal has already been declared a federal democratic republic. The other unique cultural trait of this region is polyandry marriage system, in which the wife of the eldest male of the family serves as the wife of all the brothers. During this trek to Mustang, you will find that the mysterious aura of the place also owes a lot to its geography. Its earth has red, yellow and brown colors, dominated by mysterious caves and strange figures eroded into the sandstone that composes its land. Human remains dating back to thousands of years in the past have been excavated from the area, giving an insight into the early phase of human civilization. You will discover this region like a replica of desert like Trans-Himalayan plateau of Tibet, as it remains in the rain shadow area; the mountains here are barren and treeless.

Upper Mustang Trek, a journey into this enigmatic enclave of Nepal, gives you an opportunity to see and experience of all these distinct geographical and cultural features. Besides it has other unique highlights as well. This Mustang trek moves through the deepest gorge of the earth made by the Kaligandaki River to Lo-Manthang, the cultural capital of Upper Manang. This is where the spectacular palace of Jigme Parbal Bista is located. You will also see numerous monasteries going back to hundreds of years, moving through high passes, peaks, glaciers and alpine valleys. All in all, the entire trek is a superb combination of unique culture in Nepal and natural landscapes. Bounded by the Himalayas from the north and south, the panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri make your trip scenically unforgettable one.
